Mangaluru: Though Dakshina Kannada is an education hub, the district has launched a survey to identify illiterate people and achieve the status of a fully literate district. The exercise aims to identify those who have never attended school and cannot read, write Kannada or perform simple calculations. Zilla panchayat CEO Narwade Vinayak Karbhari said every illiterate person must be identified so that none remain during the 2027 Census of India.“In an effort to survey the illiterate population of Dakshina Kannada and make them literate, it is required to register any illiterate member in the household—be it a grandmother, grandfather, father or mother—who has never attended school and does not know how to read or write Kannada or perform simple calculations,” the CEO said.“The government will distribute free books, pens, pencils, and other learning materials to those who cannot read and write. Even if an individual is severely ill and entirely incapable of reading or writing, their information must still be submitted by July 25. People should submit details mandatorily. The information provided will be kept strictly confidential,” he said.“It is the responsibility of every citizen to ensure that not a single illiterate person is found during the upcoming 2027 Census of India,” the CEO said.According to the 2011 census, there are 2.2 lakh illiterate individuals in the district. Information regarding illiterate individuals can be submitted to the district adult education officer’s office at the Dakshina Kannada ZP, he added.
