Udupi man loses ₹17.5L in KYC cyber fraud

Udupi: A Kukikatte resident in Udupi allegedly lost Rs 17.5 lakh to cyber fraudsters who posed as bank representatives and tricked him into sharing bank details under the pretext of a KYC update.According to the complaint, Ajay received a WhatsApp message around 4.15pm on Aug 27 from an unidentified person claiming to be bank representative Shivakumar. Sent from an unknown number, the message contained an APK file and instructed him to update his bank KYC.Believing it genuine, Ajay followed the instructions and entered his bank account details through a WhatsApp link. The fraudsters allegedly accessed details of another bank account and convinced him that he had to transfer funds to increase his daily transaction limit.On Sept 2, the accused allegedly transferred Rs 17.5 lakh in multiple transactions to various beneficiary accounts. CEN police registered a case under IT Act Section 66(D) and BNS sections 319(2) and 318(4). Investigation is under way.
