Two-day Halasu Mela  to begin from June 20

Mangaluru: The Kalkura Pratishtana in collaboration with the Savayava Krishika Grahaka Balaga, will organise a two-day ‘Halasu-Mavu Mela’ from Saturday at Manju Prasada, Kadri Kambala.The mela, part of the Naadu Nudi Jagruti Sammelana series, will provide a platform for organic farmers and consumers, with participation from growers across Ramanagara, Mandya, Mysuru, Belagavi and local areas.Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, president, Kalkura Pratishtana, told reporters on Wednesday, that the mela will strictly feature only organically grown agriculture products, and said that a scrutiny of that will take place. He also said that last year’s mela received good response, and this year there are around 35 stalls. Alongside fruits, stalls of books and plants will also be there.Explaining the uniqueness of the mela, he said that it will feature only farmer grown, home-made and pesticide free products. He also said the products cooked using coconut oil, groundnut oil or ghee are only permitted, and no refined oil is allowed. The mela will feature different varieties of jackfruits, including rudrakshi and chandra halasu and mango varieties like mallika and malgova.Alongside, value-added dishes made from mango and jackfruit, different aquatic plants, mango, jackfruit plants, vegetable seeds, saplings, agricultural equipment and agricultural literature will be available.For two days from 8 am to 7 pm, cultural events will take place in Pejawar Vishwesha Thirta Vedike, Vadiraj Mantapa. A pratibha puraskara cultural programme will be held to recognise student talents.
