Stones pelted at mosque during Ganesh immersion procession in Karnataka

BHATKAL: Stones were allegedly pelted at a mosque during a Ganesh idol immersion procession in Bhatkal on Wednesday night, officials said.Following the incident, additional police personnel were deployed in the area to maintain law and order.The incident took place on Wednesday night in the Gulmi area, along the road leading to the railway station, news agency PTI reported.According to sources, the procession began from Talaand around 10pm and was proceeding towards a canal for immersion when unidentified persons allegedly pelted stones at Masjid-e-Ismail, located along the route.Several window panes of the mosque were damaged in the incident, PTI reported.Police rushed additional personnel to the area after receiving information and brought the situation under control.A case has been registered against unidentified persons, while some people were taken to the police station for questioning, police said.After news of the incident spread, a large number of people gathered outside the Bhatkal Town Police Station and sought action against those responsible.Uttara Kannada superintendent of police Deepan MN reached Bhatkal from Karwar and reviewed the situation.He appealed to people to maintain peace and said legal action would be taken against those responsible.Bhatkal ASP and other senior police officials were also present and are camping in Bhatkal around the site of the incident, PTI reported.Additional police personnel have been deployed at the spot and other sensitive locations as a precautionary measure.Police are investigating the incident.According to police, the situation has since returned to normalcy.(With agency inputs)
