Mangaluru: Nitte (Deemed to be University) and KS Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA) jointly organised ‘Move for Hope 2026’, a breast cancer awareness walkathon, at Mahaveer Circle on Saturday.The event, which began at the Nitte Day Care Centre early in the morning, aimed to promote awareness about breast cancer and highlight the importance of regular screening, early detection and timely treatment.Vijaya Kranthi, assistant commissioner of police (South), Mangaluru City police, was the chief guest, while Vishal Hegde, chancellor, Nitte (Deemed to be University), presided over the programme. Prof (Dr) M Shantharam Shetty, pro-chancellor, Nitte (Deemed to be University), and Dr B Sandeep Rai, dean, KS Hegde Medical Academy, were the guests of honour.The walkathon was flagged off by the dignitaries at 6 am and continued until 7 am. The programme concluded with the distribution of prizes to the winners.The event was organised in association with the departments of oncology and general surgery of Justice KS Hegde Charitable Hospital (JKSHCH) and KSHEMA. The initiative sought to encourage community participation in breast cancer awareness and underline the significance of regular health checks, early diagnosis and timely medical consultation.According to the organisers, the walkathon served as a platform to spread awareness about breast cancer and encourage people to take proactive steps towards maintaining breast health.
