MLA raises alarm over contaminated potable water

Mangaluru: Following reports of public health complications arising from the distribution of unsafe drinking water in Bejai New Road, Battagudda, Kadri, and Chilimbi, Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath voiced sharp criticism against the Congress-administered Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC).MLA Kamath said health issues were reported by several members of the public. “Local residents complained that most houses and apartments in these areas received a supply of blue-colored, foul-smelling water. Those who consumed this water suffered severe health complications, including vomiting, fever, diarrhoea, and unbearable fatigue,” the MLA said.Concerns among the public escalated after testing conducted at a private lab in the city and the urban primary health centre in Bejai confirmed that this water is completely unfit for consumption, Kamath said.Furthermore, the MLA raised deep concerns over why officials attempted to ensure that no information regarding this matter reached the media.“It is a tragedy that even though health minister UT Khader hails from our district, they have failed to guarantee health safety to our people. Currently, the state Congress govt is running the administration through an administrator without any elected representatives in the corporation. As a result, there is no one left to listen to the grievances of the people,” said KamathStating that it is completely unacceptable for citizens to suffer due to the irresponsibility of the govt and the city corporation, the MLA demanded that the underlying cause be investigated immediately, and appropriate action taken. At the same time, he also urged authorities to take swift measures to supply clean water to residents, as they have already emptied the contaminated water from their household and apartment storage tanks.
