Mangaluru students to develop solutions for Assam Rifles field challenges
MoU signed by Assam Rifles, Srinivas University and Rudram Dynamics Foundation at the headquarters of the Directorate General of Assam Rifles in Shillong to strengthen cooperation in academics, research, innovation and training

Mangaluru: An improvised solution to a problem developed by a soldier at a remote post in the Northeast could soon receive an engineering upgrade from students in Mangaluru.A new collaboration between Assam Rifles, Srinivas University and Rudram Dynamics Foundation aims to connect academic talent with real-world challenges faced by security personnel and help transform field-level ideas into practical, tested solutions. The three organisations recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the headquarters of Directorate General of Assam Rifles in Shillong to strengthen cooperation in academics, research, innovation and training.Under the initiative, Assam Rifles will identify operational challenges, while students and faculty members from Srinivas University, in collaboration with Rudram Dynamics Foundation, will develop and refine possible solutions. Technologies such as additive manufacturing and laser cutting will be used to convert innovative ideas into functional prototypes, which can then be tested and improved based on user feedback, said Konark Rai, managing director of Rudram Dynamics Foundation.“Soldiers often devise ingenious ways to overcome problems in difficult field conditions. However, these improvisations may require engineering expertise to be developed into reliable products. This partnership aims to bridge that gap by combining the operational experience of the forces with academic research and industry capabilities,” Rai said.Kritika, research associate at Rudram Dynamics Foundation, said the initiative will help address the disconnect between product development and the needs of end-users. “A student may develop a product without knowing what soldiers on the ground actually need. Rudram Dynamics Foundation is trying to bridge the gap between research and innovation in academia and industry, and the end-users—the security forces,” she said. The MoU also envisages internship opportunities for students from different disciplines. The partners are exploring the possibility of allowing students to spend one or two months understanding field conditions and identifying practical problems that could benefit from technological interventions. The collaboration will also focus on training and upskilling Assam Rifles personnel in emerging technologies. Areas being explored include cybersecurity, data analytics, drone technology and geographic information systems (GIS). “The initiative could help students take their projects beyond competitions and classroom assignments towards practical applications and potential startups,” said Shrinivasa Mayya D, registrar (evaluation), Srinivas University.“There is a lot of talent in tier-II and tier-III colleges. We tend to focus too much on niche institutes, but many fresh ideas are emerging from these cities,” Kritika said. She added that the initiative will give students in Mangaluru an opportunity to contribute to challenges faced by personnel on the ground.“The collaboration will promote knowledge sharing, joint research, capacity building and professional development and marks a significant step towards institutional synergy, skill development and nation-building,” Assam Rifles posted on X.
