Jilted lover bought crude bombs for 600 from Karnataka’s Honnavar

Bengaluru: Four days after a jilted lover, 30, triggered an explosion in a cab in Tumakuru district leaving him dead, a man from Uttara kannada district has come under the police scanner for allegedly selling crude bombs to the deceased.Nagendra allegedly abducted his former girlfriend, Ramya Nayak, from Bengaluru on June 27. Nagendra was planning to take her to Ankola in Uttara Kannada district as he wanted to marry her. However, following a complaint from Ramya’s roommate, police contacted cab driver Praveen and asked him to stop at the nearest police station.Overhearing the conversation, Nagendra pulled out three bombs he was carrying. Praveen snatched one, while Nagendra succeeded in lighting two bombs, which exploded quickly, setting the car on fire and charring Nagendra to death on National Highway in Tumakuru district. Praveen and Ramya managed to escape unhurt.Police said Nagendra purchased the crude bombs for Rs 600 (Rs 200 apiece) from a villager in Chandavar village of Honnavar taluk on May 29.The bombs were sold allegedly by George Niklov Fernandes, 64, whose father worked in a Sivakasi factory in Tamil Nadu. These bombs were mostly used to kill fish in ponds and lakes.On hearing about Nagendra’s death in the explosion caused by crude bombs, George’s blood sugar levels shot up and he was hospitalised. Tumakuru superintendent of police KV Ashok said they will take George into custody once he is discharged from the hospital.George lives in the village with his wife, while their only son, who has completed an MBA degree, is working with a private company in Bengaluru. “Realising that police will zero in on him, George threw all ingredients, including gunpowder, into a lake near his house,” police said.
