Mangaluru: Legendary playback singer S Janaki also made a significant contribution to Tulu cinema, lending her voice to several popular films during the industry’s early years.In a social media post paying tribute to the celebrated singer, Taranath Gatti Kapikad, chairman of the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, recalled Janaki’s significant contribution to Tulu cinema and the timeless songs that continue to resonate with audiences.He stated, one such song is ‘Ekkasaka, Ekkasaka’ from the Tulu film ‘Koti Chennaya’. Sung by Janaki and penned by Prof B Viveka Rai, the song remains one of the all-time popular numbers in Tulu cinema.Kapikad noted that Janaki sang extensively in the early phase of Tulu cinema. It was KN Tailor who introduced her to the Tulu film industry. She lent her voice to ‘Dareda Budedi’, produced by Tailor in 1971, followed by ‘Bisatti Babu’, released in 1972. The year 1973 was particularly significant in Janaki’s association with Tulu cinema. Her voice entertained Tulu audiences in three films released that year, including ‘Udalda Tudar’, ‘Koti Chennaya’ and ‘Yaan Sanyasi Aape’.Her association with Tulu films continued with Dr Sanjeeva Dandakeri’s ‘Bayya Mallige’, released in 1974, and ‘Belli Dota’, which hit the screens in 1977. In 1978, Janaki also sang for ‘Nyayog Jindabad’, produced by Kemtur Dodanna Shetty, and another Tulu film, ‘Kariyani Kattandi Kandane’.Recalling her contribution, Kapikad said Janaki’s mellifluous voice had entertained generations of Tulu audiences and remains an integral part of the region’s cinematic heritage. He paid respectful tribute to the legendary singer, remembering her invaluable contribution to Tulu cinema.It may be recalled that the legendary singer visited the coastal city in June and offered prayers at the Mahathobara Shri Mangaladevi Temple. During her visit, devotees were seen taking selfies with her.
