Jal Jeevan Mission: Dakshina Kannada achieves 75% implementation

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada district achieved 75% of the target under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), which aims to provide safe, adequate piped drinking water to every rural household.Dakshina Kannada ZP CEO Narwade Vinayak Karbhari said that the district has set a target of providing drinking water connections to 90,388 under the JJM. So far, 67,406 water supply connections were given under the scheme in nine taluks of the district. The scheme was rolled out considering 14,47,760 population with 3,34,185 houses in the district. Out of 3,34,185 houses, 2,43,797 have already been provided connections either through the respective gram panchayats or by the house owners on their own. Under the JJM, only 22,982 remaining connections have to be provided, the CEO said.In fact, the JJM scheme was being implemented in the district in three batches. Officials said that the total estimated cost of the scheme implementation was Rs 573.92 crore to take up 700 works in three batches. While 458 works were taken up in the first batch, 134 and 108 works were taken up in the second and third batches, respectively. The district achieved 93.8% work progress after spending Rs 517.5 crore for the scheme. Out of 700 works, 657 have been completed, officials said.In addition, 7 new multi-village drinking water schemes are also being implemented in the district to provide drinking water to villagers in 144 gram panchayats. Those schemes are being implemented in Moodubidire, Ulayibettu, Ilanthila, Kutrupady, Alankaru, Alike and Ullal-Kotekar.
