Udupi: MLA Yashpal Suvarna visited the site of the fire accident near the city bus stand reported on Sunday, along with officials and inspected the extent of damage caused to a commercial building.At the spot, he instructed the tahsildar and revenue officials of the Udupi city municipal council to submit a detailed report on the losses to the govt. He also gathered information from local traders regarding the incident. Speaking on the occasion, Suvarna said that a major fire mishap occurred in Udupi city, causing damage worth crores of rupees, as per preliminary assessment. He urged the state govt to sanction Rs 10 crore as compensation under a special case. He also noted that there were complaints from the public regarding the delayed arrival of the fire department and said that further information would be sought from the authorities. A request was already made to the home minister to provide additional vehicles and fill vacant posts in the Udupi fire department. Suvarna further stated that special efforts would be taken to complete the ongoing construction of the fire station in Manipal and make it operational at the earliest. Udupi CMC commissioner Mahantesh Hangargi and others were present.
