Bengaluru: South Western Railway (SWR) has warned of strict action against those dumping garbage and construction debris on railway land even as it launched a major drive, in coordination with Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and the city’s five civic corporations, to clear waste accumulated along tracks in Bengaluru within the next two months.On Saturday, minister of state for railways V Somanna said legal action and penalties will be imposed against violators as Railways steps up enforcement to prevent people dumping waste on its land. He said the focus will be on clearing existing garbage and preventing fresh dumping through strict enforcement.Railway officials said indiscriminate dumping of garbage along tracks has emerged as a serious safety concern.

Fires in such heaps have on several occasions damaged signalling and electrical cables, disrupting railway operations.An official said garbage and debris have accumulated at several locations along major rail corridors, including Bengaluru-Mysuru and Bengaluru-Hosur routes. “Once debris is dumped repeatedly, it erodes the boundary between railway land and adjoining properties, eventually leading to encroachment of railway land,” the official said.
