Congress submits memorandum citing lapses in SIR process

TIMES NEWS NETWORK Mangaluru: A Congress delegation led by MLC Ivan D’Souza submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, raising concerns over alleged irregularities and procedural lapses in the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls and the voter enumeration process in the district.Speaking on the occasion, the MLC alleged that political party representatives were providing booth-level officers (BLOs) with enumeration forms of individuals whose names continue to appear in the old electoral rolls despite no longer residing at the listed addresses. To ensure all eligible voters are included in the electoral rolls during the SIR exercise, the Congress has appointed over 1,750 Booth Level Agents (BLAs) across the district. While D’Souza expressed support for the district administration’s goal of an organised process, he noted that the party has received reports concerning guideline violations and the misuse of the enumeration process in specific areas. Efforts were made to generate records even in areas where the original houses had already been demolished, he said. The Congress delegation alleged that BLOs in several areas were not conducting door-to-door visits for enumeration form distribution. The delegation also brought to the notice of the district administration that BLOs in some areas were not helping voters to fill the enumeration forms. Eligible voters may be deprived of the right to vote due to this lack of proper assistance, they pointed out.The Congress delegation also alleged that in some areas, forms were being distributed through political party agents rather than BLOs, and voters who were absent during the distribution were not provided with the forms. The delegation urged the administration to ensure that BLOs strictly adhere to Election Commission guidelines by visiting every household, assisting voters in completing the forms, and ensuring that no eligible voter is excluded.DC Darshan HV received the memorandum. The delegation included former mayors Shashidhar Hegde and Bhaskara Moily, and others.
