BENGALURU: A shocking murder in Kengeri came to light after a drunken mother-son duo killed a 70-year-old woman and attempted to conceal the crime, only for it to be exposed when they invited a friend over for a drinking session.The deceased has been identified as Jayamma, a resident of Monisha Enclave apartment who was murdered by her daughter, Bhagyalakshmi, and grandson, Kushal, at their residence in Subhashnagar near Kengeri Satellite Town in North-West Bengaluru on Monday night.Based on the preliminary investigation, police said the family was reportedly addicted to alcohol and frequently used the money they got from selling off property. A heated argument had erupted between Jayamma and Bhagyalakshmi over the issue of spending property money on alcohol.The dispute turned violent when an argument escalated into a physical assault on Jayamma by Bhagyalakshmi, during which Kushal joined his mother. In a fit of rage, the duo reportedly attacked Jayamma with a wooden pounding stick used to make ragi balls, inflicting fatal injuries.After the murder, the accused kept the incident hidden and did not inform anyone about Jayamma’s death.In a bizarre twist, a few hours later, Kushal called one of his friends and asked him to bring liquor. Claiming that his grandmother had died and that he was mentally disturbed, he invited the friend for a drinking session.When the friend arrived and noticed Jayamma’s body lying inside the house with injuries, he became suspicious and alerted the police.Police rushed to the spot and uncovered the alleged murder. Following an investigation, officers arrested Bhagyalakshmi and Kushal.Deputy commissioner of police (South-West) Anitha B Haddannavar said, We got information about the elderly woman’s murder in her house. A person named Dhananjay informed the police. When a police team rushed to the spot, she was found dead in front of the bathroom. Bhagyalakshmi and Kushal are addicted to alcohol. The mother and son used to shout loudly under the influence of alcohol. Following which Jayamma got into an argument with them. Kushal attacked her with a wooden pounding stick. The family hailed from Hassan district. Jayamma had come to stay with them for the last two months. The Kengeri police have registered a case under Section 103 (punishment for murder) of the BNS and are continuing further investigation.
