Kannadiga Helpline assists 630 stranded passengers return home from UAE

Mangaluru: Amid the ongoing West Asia conflict, the ‘ Kannadiga Helpline’ has emerged as a key support system for Kannada-speaking tourists stranded in the UAE. The helpline has facilitated safe return of 630 individuals to India so far.Originally formed to assist Kannadigas during crises such as COVID-19 and floods, the helpline was reactivated in response to the present West Asia war. Under the leadership of NRI entrepreneur Ronald Colaco with coordination by Hidayath Addoor, more than 30 Kannada organisations across the UAE came together to provide relief to stranded passengers. The helpline’s primary focus was on ensuring safe return. According to Addoor, stranded passengers were provided with assistance in booking alternative flights and were safely repatriated. Special attention was given to vulnerable groups, including the elderly, pregnant, and the sick. Beyond sending people back home, the team undertook extensive on-ground relief work. More than 235 people were provided free food and accommodation at various locations in UAE, including facilities supported by Praveen Shetty, Isaac Haji and Dheeraj Jain. During the initial phase of the crisis, 1,180 meals and 70 food kits were distributed. Healthcare support was another key focus area. As many as 71 individuals underwent health screening for free, while 32 others were provided with medicines. Another 22 ailing individuals referred by the Indian Consulate were provided with financial help funded by Colaco. Private transport was provided to help stranded passengers reach the airports in Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and Abu Dhabi. The initiative saw active participation from several Kannada and community organisations across the UAE. In recognition of the team’s efforts, Colaco hosted an ‘Iftar Harmony Meet’ at his residence, where members monitoring the helpline were felicitated for their selfless service.
