An Indian-origin truck driver has been arrested in Canada as part of a major investigation into a cross-border smuggling operation involving drugs and contraband worth millions of dollars. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said “Abhishek Abhishek” was taken into custody after a transport truck he was driving was allegedly allowed into Canada carrying large quantities of illegal goods. The case is linked to a border services officer who has also been charged.According to officials, the investigation began after the Canada Border Services Agency shared information with the police about a staff member at the Queenston-Lewiston port of entry in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, a crossing between the United States and Canada. Authorities later found that a truck and trailer had been permitted to cross the border without following proper procedures.Police said the truck contained millions of dollars worth of opium, cannabis products and tobacco. Following the findings, Abhishek was arrested along with border officer Daniel Notarianni, who was taken into custody earlier this year. Both men now face a series of serious charges. These include conspiracy to import controlled substances, trafficking, importation of Schedule I drugs, and possession for the purpose of trafficking under Canadian law. They are also charged under the Cannabis Act for multiple counts related to distribution and possession, as well as offences linked to the transportation and sale of tobacco.Officials said a warrant for Notarianni’s arrest was executed on March 6, 2026, as part of the ongoing investigation by the RCMP Federal Policing Central Region.Court proceedings have already begun in the case. Abhishek appeared in court on March 13, while Notarianni was scheduled to appear on March 18.
