Govt hosp dream in Puttur inches closer to reality

Mangaluru: In a major development, the govt on Tuesday issued an official order for the construction of a medical hospital in Puttur, fulfilling a long-pending demand of the people. A 300-bed hospital will be built at Sediyapu in Bannur village with a sanctioned budget of Rs 180 crore.MLA Ashok Kumar Rai stated that along with the allocation of funds, the department of medical education has also given final approval to the design and structural plans of the hospital building, which will come up on 40 acres of land reserved for the project. In the 2025-26 budget, it was announced that a new medical college would be established in Puttur, and that steps would be taken to upgrade the existing 100-bed taluk hospital. However, after examining the proposal submitted by the chief engineer of the health and family welfare department, along with inputs from the finance department, it was found that establishing a medical college at the existing hospital site was not feasible. Since matters related to medical college hospitals fall under the department of medical education, the project was transferred accordingly through a govt order dated Dec 4, 2025. Based on the revised proposal, it was decided to construct a new 300-bed teaching hospital at Sediyapu in Bannur village of Puttur taluk. The chief engineer prepared an estimate of Rs 180 crore for the project, and sought administrative approval. The revenue department has already identified and reserved 40 acres of land at the site for establishing a district govt medical college and hospital. The tender process for the hospital construction has also been completed. A foundation laying ceremony will be held soon. Once the hospital construction is completed, work on the medical college building will begin, the MLA said.
