Mangaluru: Even as preparations began for the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the second phase of the Mahatma Gandhi Nagar Vikas Yojana (MGNVY 2.0) worth Rs 165 crore, local vigilance squads will be formed in all the wards of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), where various works will be taken up. MLC Ivan D’Souza said that development works will be taken up, considering the local requirement.“During the concrete roadworks, construction of utility ducts, box drains and covering slabs is being regulated to prevent further road digging and cutting. A local awareness committee will be formed to provide necessary guidance to contractors during the project,” said Ivan D’Souza.He told reporters on Thursday that urban development minister Byrathi Suresh will lay the foundation stone for key projects at various locations in the city on Saturday in the presence of district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao.The state govt has approved the implementation of the MGNVY phase 2, with an estimated budget of Rs 2,000 crore, in cities like Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Ballari, Davanagere, Shivamogga, Vijayapura and Tumakuru from the fiscal year 2024-25 to 2026-27. Some projects have already commenced in the MCC limits. The projects to be taken up in Mangaluru include Rs 124.5 crore under the general unit grant, Rs 28.5 crore under the Scheduled Caste grant and Rs 12 crore under the Scheduled Tribe grant, he explained.“The sewerage issue in the city has become quite severe. Water sources like rivers and wells are polluted due to sewage water. A comprehensive sewerage plan costing Rs 1,250 crore has been submitted to the govt. Local representatives need to collectively urge the state govt for the implementation of this plan. Local legislators should work beyond politics for development,” he added.
