Mangaluru: The New Mangalore Port Displaced Mogaveera Naalku Patna Samyuktha Sabha on Saturday submitted a charter of demands to Dakshina Kannada MP Brijesh Chowta and Mangaluru North MLA Bharath Y Shetty.During Hakkottaya Sabha in Kulai, the sabha sought management rights over the proposed Kulai fishing harbour and resolution of long-pending rehabilitation issues.Sabha president Mohan Kodical said their elders surrendered land for the construction of New Mangalore Port in the 1960s, contributing to Mangaluru’s growth as an economic hub.However, promised jobs, CSR funds and other benefits had not been adequately provided. “The fisheries road was made after the city corporation came into existence. New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) did not give anything,” he said.Vice-president Srinivas Puthran said the community had played a major role in the region’s development.In its appeal, representing the Mogaveera communities of Thannirbhavi, Kodikal, Panambur and Kulur, the sabha called for the fishing harbour’s operations to be entrusted to the Kulai Fishermen’s Cooperative Society.The association demanded that the Kulai Fishermen’s Cooperative Society manage the proposed harbour, with priority in supplying ice, diesel and fishing equipment and collecting entry fees.
