Udupi: A court has sentenced a man to five years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 40,000 for assaulting and threatening a jail warden at Udupi District Prison in 2011.According to police, the incident occurred on Dec 3, 2011, when the jail warden was taking the attendance of inmates at Udupi District Prison in Anjaru village, within Hiriyadka police limits. The warden had instructed the inmates to proceed to their respective barracks to facilitate the headcount.Saffan Hussain alias Razak, an undertrial prisoner, who was standing near the kitchen, allegedly threatened the warden, saying he would kill him, and assaulted him on the left cheek, causing severe pain.Hiriyadka police registered a case under Sections 506 and 333 of the IPC. After investigation, police arrested the accused with the permission of the court and filed a chargesheet before the court on Jan 10, 2012.The accused was released on bail on May 29, 2013. However, he subsequently failed to appear before the court for the trial and went absconding. As he repeatedly failed to appear, the case was classified as an LPC (Long Pending Case) on June 24, 2022.Police later secured the accused under a body warrant and produced him before rincipal district and sessions court, Udupi, on April 23, 2026. The case was subsequently taken up.After the trial, the court recently convicted Saffan Hussain and sentenced him to five years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 40,000.
