Mangaluru wakes up to heavy rains bringing relief from dry monsoon spell

Mangaluru: After a brief dry spell, monsoon showers returned to Mangaluru Friday, triggering waterlogging, tree fall and power disruptions in parts of the city.According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), Dakshina Kannada recorded 70.1mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, 52% above normal. Mangaluru and Ullal taluks received 120.4mm and 120.3mm respectively, with Surathkal hobli recording the highest at about 121.2mm, followed by Gurupura at 120.7mm.Other taluks saw moderate to heavy rain: Moodubidire 70mm, Kadaba 68.1mm, Puttur 67.9mm, Sullia 61.1mm and Belthangady 46.5mm.Udupi recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 88.9 mm, 68% above normal. Within the district, Kaup, Byndoor and Kundapura taluks received 119.6mm, 113.1mm and 101.4mm respectively. Udupi taluk recorded 85.6mm, Karkala 72.7mm, Brahmavara 71.5mm and Hebri 60.8mm, with Kaup also topping rainfall at the hobli level with 119.6m.Despite the fresh spell, both districts remain about 42% below normal for the southwest monsoon season so far. Dakshina Kannada has recorded 927.7mm against the normal 1607.2mm, a deficit of 42.2%, while Udupi has received 1102.9mm against the normal 1904.8 mm, a deficit of 42%.Between July 1 and 17, Dakshina Kannada recorded 532.6mm against the normal 679.3mm, a shortfall of around 22%, while Udupi recorded 544.8mm against 799.3mm, a deficit of around 32%.Across coastal Karnataka, the 24-hour rainfall average stood at 74.8mm, 75% above normal.Flooding was reported near Kodialguthu and Bhagavathi Nagar, with smaller waterlogging incidents in a few areas. A tree was uprooted near Bendoor, and locals said the power supply in nearby areas was disrupted for a few hours.Yellow alert for two daysIMD has issued a yellow alert for coastal Karnataka on July 18 and 19. It forecast heavy rainfall between 64.5mm and 115.4mm is likely at one or two places in coastal districts. A separate landslide warning has also been issued for the coastal and Western Ghats regions of the state on July 17 and 18.
