Man held for attacking cop, causing public inconvenience

Udupi: Police have arrested a man for allegedly attacking police personal with a sickle after being questioned over playing loud music and causing public inconvenience along the national highway at Kotathattu village on Tuesday.The accused has been identified as Ranjith Somayaji, from Kota, who claimed to have studied engineering. The reason for this behaviour is yet to be ascertained.Police said they received a phone call informing them that a man had placed a large television, sound box and laptop near the national highway, opposite Bellada Ganapathi Temple, and was playing loud music, causing inconvenience to the public.Acting on the information, police personnel, including complainant Raghavendra BN from the department reached the spot around 9.30am and allegedly found the accused playing loud music through a sound system installed on a mud road adjoining the highway. When questioned about the inconvenience caused to the public, the accused allegedly became agitated and said he would do whatever he wanted.The accused then allegedly placed a wooden table in the middle of the national highway and kept the sound system on it, blocking the road and obstructing vehicular movement. He also allegedly pushed down and damaged a police motorcycle .Police said the accused then went to his nearby house and returned carrying a sickle and an axe. He allegedly threatened to kill the police personnel and attacked a cop with the sickle, causing a bleeding injury to his left hand.Despite attempts to pacify him, the accused allegedly continued to act aggressively, obstructed the police from discharging his official duties and issued death threats. Kota police registered a case under Sections 352, 351(2), 132, 110, 121 and 270 of the BNS.
