Tumakuru city police registered a suo-motu case against an contractor on charges of employing three labourers for manual scavenging. The incident took place Thursday morning when the workers were asked to clean two pits at KEB Association building in Tumakuru town, police said.Based on the complaint filed by constable Raghu SR, police registered the case against contractor Guruprasad Friday.Raghu said he came across a video on social media, showing three men carrying excreta on their heads without any safety gear. “On inspecting the video, I realised it was KEB Association building. I visited the spot and found that two pits were cleaned. I interacted with workers and others from the association who claimed Guruprasad had assigned the three men for manual scavenging,” his complaint read.A senior police officer said Guruprasad had told the men they needed to carry mud and other waste materials from the association building. “But when we reached the spot, we found that we had to carry excreta on our head. We agreed to do so as we needed money,” the workers told the investigating officers.Police are yet to trace Guruprasad.
