Mangaluru: Two of Mangalore University’s four constituent colleges, in Nelyadi and at Bannadka in Moodubidire, are in their final academic year and are likely to shut down from the next academic year if the state govt does not act on the university’s request for support.Admissions have not been taken for the past two years, leaving only final-year students, university sources said. The Bannadka and Nelyadi colleges, along with the first-grade college on the university’s main campus at Mangalagangothri in Konaje, do not receive govt grants and are run using internal resources. With the varsity under financial strain, continuing operations have become difficult, prompting appeals to the govt for a takeover or direct financial assistance.“There is no govt response to the requests. Two colleges currently have only students in their final year, and next year they are likely to shut down,” a source said.MU registrar Ganesh Sanjeev said closure is under consideration due to funding constraints, but local demand has prompted a push for continuation. “Though varsity is planning to shut them down as it is not able to fund them, there is a demand from the locals to run them, and we have requested the govt to take it over. There is no development on the same,” he said.In contrast, the first-grade college on the Konaje campus continues to draw demand despite similar plans to shut it over the past two years. Sanjeev said applications have risen steadily, even though the college relies on guest faculty. “The total intake is about 40 students, including 10 foreign students. So far, we have received more than 60 applications,” he said.He added that while a first-grade college in Mudipu has permanent faculty, interest in the campus college remains high.Sanjeev said the university has invited applications for guest faculty positions at its constituent colleges this year, with fewer positions being filled than in previous years.
