Mangaluru: The Karnataka State Cricket Association’s Mangaluru zone will interact with schools and also plan to send coaches wherever needed for the selection of teams for the school cricket.Chairman of Mangaluru zone Dr Shrikanth Rai told TOI that the association will likely hold the tournament this year after they understand school infrastructure, coaching availability, and readiness to participate. “We are hoping to get eight to 10 teams ready within a month,” Rai said. The tournament will be full-fledged starting next year with its inclusion in the zonal calendar alongside league events. The association is considering a structured approach wherein schools will be guided to select around 15 to 16 players, who will then train and play practice matches for a few weeks before participating in a tournament. He said that the main objective is to ensure that children enjoy the game rather than face intense competition at a young age.Rai noted that the reopening of schools coincides with the monsoon season, and during this period, slots are available to host events. However, he said the association will adjust match timings or reschedule depending on weather conditions. KSCA is working in coordination with the Mangaluru Maharaja Trophy franchise and has already started discussions with coaches to train school students and help in selection.Explaining challenges, he said that we have to discuss with schools to understand their problems, whether they have a place to practise or not; if not, we have to provide. Regular leagues like the first division, U-19, U-16, etc., including women’s tournaments, will begin after the monsoon as per schedule. He also pointed out the need to revive sporting culture in schools, expressing concern over declining participation.
