Mangaluru: Calling for a massive struggle against “anti-worker” labour codes, Sunil Kumar Bajal, district general secretary of CITU, Friday said the Centre’s policies had undermined the spirit of May Day by increasing the workday to 12 hours. He was speaking as the chief speaker at a public meeting of workers held in the city as part of May Day celebrations. The May Day Celebration Committee, formed by workers, employees and public organisations from all sectors, also took out a procession from Dr BR Ambedkar Circle, condemning the anti-worker policies of the central and state govts.Bajal said the “imperialist system”, which he described as an extension of capitalism, was trying to control the world. “The war-mongering policies of American imperialists are severely affecting the common people and the working class. The global war clouds have led to extreme price hikes, putting workers’ lives in severe distress,” he said.Krishnappa Konchadi, honorary president of the committee, said that without improving the lives of the working class, which creates wealth in society, neither social development nor the country’s progress was possible. He alleged that, except for socialist countries, other nations protected the interests of capitalists rather than the working class.CITU district leader Ravichandra Konchadi criticised the Narendra Modi govt, saying that despite the slogan ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’, it had “destroyed the lives of the country’s working class and done nothing for the people”.
