Oppn saved democracy by foiling Centre’s move: Mahila Cong

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada District Mahila Congress (urban) president S Appi said that the opposition has saved democracy by defeating the Centre’s attempt to pass the delimitation bill along with the women’s reservation bill. She told reporters on Wednesday that, had the bill been passed, it would have caused significant injustice to South India, and women in the region would not have received fair representation. She argued that if only the women’s reservation bill had been introduced, it would have been passed and would have enhanced the Prime Minister’s stature. Questioning the need to link the delimitation bill with the women’s reservation bill, she alleged that PM Narendra Modi attempted to introduce the delimitation proposal without allowing adequate discussion. “Apart from attacking the Congress, he has not spoken in favour of women,” she said. Appi urged the Centre to implement the women’s reservation bill passed in 2023. She added that BJP functionaries have no moral right to lecture the Congress on women’s issues, pointing out that the Congress has given the country a woman Prime Minister, a woman president and a woman speaker. She further said that the Congress has undertaken several welfare measures for women and accused the BJP of lacking the moral authority to criticise it.
