15-day marriage ends in mystery as bride disappears in Chintamani taluk near Bengaluru

Bengaluru: In a bizarre turn of events, a 24-year-old woman who was married in a single-day arrangement has allegedly gone missing from her husband’s house — triggering suspicion, confusion, and claims of deception. The incident has occurred at Gownicheruvupalli village under Batlahalli police limits in Chintamani taluk, around 100km from Bengaluru. A complaint about his missing wife and gold has been lodged by Bhaskar, a native of Madanapalli in Andhra Pradesh and an employee at a private firm in Bengaluru. The drama started when Bhaskar, who has been searching for a bride, was approached by three marriage brokers, one of them reportedly his relative, with a proposal for Nethra from Kotlapalli near Marganapalli. Things moved at an unusual pace. On Feb 27, both Bhaskar and Nethra met for the first time at one of the brokers’ homes in Marganapalli village. Within hours, the duo agreed to marry, and the wedding was solemnised the very same day. Bhaskar allegedly paid Rs 75,000 to one of the brokers, purportedly for the bride. Following the wedding, the couple stayed at Bhaskar’s uncle’s house in Gownicheruvupalli for about 15 days. On March 15, Bhaskar left for his hometown, leaving Nethra behind. By evening, the story took a dramatic twist when Bhaskar received a call from his uncle informing him that Nethra had vanished without a trace. Despite efforts, the family could not locate her. Bhaskar rushed back and filed a complaint with Batlahalli police. In his statement, he claimed he had been pressured into a quick marriage by the brokers, who warned him that the bride would otherwise be married off to someone else. What surfaced later, however, deepened the mystery with Bhaskar alleging that Nethra was already married, had two children, and had even undergone a tubectomy. Sub-inspector Shivakumar said there is no mention of missing jewellery in the written complaint, though Bhaskar has claimed verbally that she took some ornaments with her. Investigations are on to trace the woman and verify the claims about her identity and past.
